Weighted mean: x̄ = Σ(xᵢ·nᵢ)/N, where N = Σnᵢ. Variance: σ² = Σ(nᵢ·(xᵢ−x̄)²)/N. These are the standard measures for data collected into a grouped frequency distribution (with frequencies).

When data are collected into a grouped frequency distribution (a value xix_i + its frequency nin_i), the statistical measures are computed taking the frequencies into account.

Weighted mean: xˉ=∑xiniN,N=∑ni\bar{x}=\frac{\sum x_i n_i}{N},\quad N=\sum n_i

Variance and standard deviation: σ2=∑ni(xi−xˉ)2N,σ=σ2\sigma^2=\frac{\sum n_i(x_i-\bar{x})^2}{N},\qquad \sigma=\sqrt{\sigma^2}

The median is the middle value (for which the cumulative frequency reaches N/2N/2), and the mode — the value with the largest frequency. The calculator accepts any number of rows — you enter the values and their frequencies.

→ mean ≈ 3.65; N=20
Standard deviation
→ σ = √(Σnᵢ(xᵢ−x̄)²/N)

Frequently asked questions

How does a grouped frequency distribution differ from an ordinary data set?+

In a grouped frequency distribution each value has an assigned frequency (how many times it occurs). This saves writing out the repetitions — the mean is computed as a frequency-weighted mean.

How do you compute the standard deviation with frequencies?+

First the weighted mean x̄, then the variance σ² = Σnᵢ(xᵢ−x̄)²/N, and the standard deviation is its square root. N is the sum of all frequencies.
