Combinations — when order does not matter (e.g. a lottery draw). Arrangements — when order matters (e.g. a PIN code).
Combinatorics answers the question “in how many ways?”. Key notions:
Permutations are orderings of all items, arrangements — a choice of out of taking order into account, combinations — without order. The calculator also works out arrangements with repetition .
In the second mode you can compute classical probability: — the ratio of favourable outcomes to all equally likely ones, together with the probability of the complementary event .
Combinations — when order does not matter (e.g. picking a team, a lottery). Arrangements — when order matters (e.g. a competition podium, a PIN code).
n! is the product of the consecutive integers from 1 to n (e.g. 5! = 120). It counts the number of ways to arrange n distinct items in a row.
