Vieta's formulas relate the roots to the coefficients without solving the equation: sum = −b/a, product = c/a. Handy for checking solutions and problems "without computing the discriminant".

Vieta's formulas relate the roots of a quadratic equation ax2+bx+c=0ax^2+bx+c=0 to its coefficients — without solving the equation:

x1+x2=−bax1⋅x2=cax_1+x_2=-\frac{b}{a}\qquad x_1\cdot x_2=\frac{c}{a}

They hold even when Δ<0\Delta<0 (giving the sum and product of the complex roots). They are handy for quickly checking solutions, finding roots "by inspection", and problems where you need not compute the discriminant.

Conversely — given the roots, you can rebuild the equation (for a=1a=1): x2−(x1+x2)x+x1x2=0x^2-(x_1+x_2)x+x_1 x_2=0. The calculator works both ways.

Examples

x² − 5x + 6 = 0
→ sum = 5, product = 6 (roots 2 and 3)
Roots 2 and 3
→ equation x² − 5x + 6 = 0

Frequently asked questions

What are Vieta's formulas used for?+

To relate the roots to the coefficients without computing the discriminant — e.g. when the roots are known to be integers, they are easy to "guess" from the sum and product.

Do they work when Δ < 0?+

Yes — Vieta's formulas give the sum and product of the roots even when they are complex. The sum −b/a and product c/a remain real numbers.
