At time t =s:v = 10.19 m/s, h = 15.095 m

g = 9.81 m/s². At the highest point velocity = 0. Rise time = fall time, so flight time = 2·t_rise. At time t: v = v₀ − g·t (a negative v means it is already falling).

A vertical throw upward is motion with an initial velocity directed upward, slowed by gravity. The key quantities (for g=9.81 ms2g=9.81\ \tfrac{\text{m}}{\text{s}^2}):

hmax=v022gtrise=v0gtflight=2v0gh_{max}=\frac{v_0^2}{2g}\qquad t_{rise}=\frac{v_0}{g}\qquad t_{flight}=\frac{2v_0}{g}

At the highest point the velocity drops to zero, and the rise time equals the fall time. At any instant tt: v=v0−g tv=v_0-g\,t and h=v0t−12gt2h=v_0 t-\tfrac12 g t^2 (a negative vv means it is already falling).

Examples

v₀ = 20 m/s
→ h_max ≈ 20.4 m, t_rise ≈ 2.04 s, t_flight ≈ 4.08 s
After t = 1 s (for v₀ = 20)
→ v ≈ 10.2 m/s, h ≈ 15.1 m

Frequently asked questions

What is the velocity at the top?+

Exactly zero — the body stops for an instant before it starts to fall. The velocity changes sign, but at the highest point its value is 0.

Does the rise take as long as the fall?+

Yes — a vertical throw is symmetric. The body returns to the starting point with the same speed (in magnitude) it was thrown with, after a time 2·t_rise.
