Midpoint of a segment

S=(x1+x22,y1+y22)S=\left(\tfrac{x_1+x_2}{2},\tfrac{y_1+y_2}{2}\right)

Result unit: — (coordinates)

What it describes

The coordinates of the midpoint of a segment are the arithmetic means of the endpoints' coordinates.

Symbols

SS
midpoint of the segment
(x1,y1),(x2,y2)(x_1,y_1),(x_2,y_2)
endpoints of the segment

Where it comes from

The midpoint has coordinates that are the averages of the endpoints' coordinates — "halfway along" each axis.

When to use it

Midpoint of a segment, center of symmetry, center of a circle from the endpoints of a diameter.

Example

Given A(2,4)A(2,4), B(6,8)B(6,8). Find the midpoint of the segment.
SubstitutionA(2,4)A(2,4), B(6,8)B(6,8).
ResultS=(2+62,4+82)=(4,6)S=\left(\tfrac{2+6}{2},\tfrac{4+8}{2}\right)=(4,6).
