Formulas & tables/Mathematics/Analytic geometry/Slope-intercept equation of a line

Slope-intercept equation of a line

y=ax+by=ax+b

Result unit: — (line equation)

What it describes

The slope-intercept form of a line; aa is the slope, bb is the y-intercept.

Symbols

aa
slope
bb
y-intercept
x,yx, y
coordinates of a point

Where it comes from

aa tells you how steeply the line rises (its slope), and bb tells you where it crosses the y-axis. A positive aa means the line rises; a negative aa means it falls.

When to use it

Writing and graphing lines; linear functions.

Example

A line passes through (0,1)(0,1) and has slope 2. Give its equation.
Substitutiona=2a=2, b=1b=1.
Resulty=2x+1y=2x+1.
