Formulas & tables/Mathematics/Combinatorics/Combinations (binomial coefficient)

Combinations (binomial coefficient)

(nk)=n!k!(n−k)!\binom{n}{k}=\dfrac{n!}{k!(n-k)!}

Result unit: — (liczba)

What it describes

The number of k-element subsets of an n-element set (order does not matter).

Symbols

nn
number of elements
kk
size of the selection

Where it comes from

Choosing k elements from n with order irrelevant — we divide the variations by k!k! (the number of arrangements of the chosen elements). This is the binomial coefficient.

When to use it

Draws, teams, selections without order (lottery, committees).

Example

How many 2-person pairs can be formed from 5 people?
Substitutionn=5n=5, k=2k=2.
Result(52)=10\binom{5}{2}=10.
