Derivative of a power

(xn)′=nxn−1(x^n)'=n x^{n-1}

Result unit: — (funkcja)

What it describes

The derivative of a power function.

Symbols

xx
variable
nn
exponent

Where it comes from

The exponent "comes down" as a factor, and then decreases by 1. This is the most frequently used rule of differentiation.

When to use it

Differentiating polynomials and power functions.

Example

Find the derivative of the function x4x^4.
Substitutionn=4n=4.
Result(x4)′=4x3(x^4)'=4x^3.
