Formulas & tables/Mathematics/Plane geometry/Area of a circular sector

Area of a circular sector

P=α360∘⋅πr2P=\dfrac{\alpha}{360^\circ}\cdot \pi r^2

Result unit: area units

What it describes

The area of a circular sector with central angle α\alpha.

Symbols

PP
area of the sector
α\alpha
central angle
[°]
rr
radius

Where it comes from

A sector is a "slice of pie" — the portion of the circle's area proportional to the central angle.

When to use it

Areas of sectors, pie charts.

Example

The radius is r=6r=6 and the central angle is 90∘90^\circ. Find the area of the sector.
Substitutionα=90∘\alpha=90^\circ, r=6r=6.
ResultP=90360⋅π⋅36=9π≈28.3P=\dfrac{90}{360}\cdot\pi\cdot36=9\pi\approx28.3.
