Standard form

f(x)=ax2+bx+cf(x)=ax^2+bx+c

Result unit: — (function value)

What it describes

The standard form of a quadratic function; the sign of aa determines which way the parabola opens.

Symbols

a,b,ca, b, c
coefficients (a≠0a\neq 0)
xx
argument

Where it comes from

The most basic way to write a quadratic function. The coefficient aa sets the shape: a>0a>0 — opens upward (minimum), a<0a<0 — opens downward (maximum). cc is the yy-intercept.

When to use it

The starting point — from it we compute the discriminant, vertex, and roots.

Example

State the direction the parabola opens and its yy-intercept for f(x)=2x2−3x+1f(x)=2x^2-3x+1.
Substitutiona=2>0a=2>0, c=1c=1.
ResultOpens upward, yy-intercept at (0,1)(0,1).
