Frequency of an LC circuit

f=12πLCf=\dfrac{1}{2\pi\sqrt{LC}}

Result unit: Hz (hertz)

What it describes

The natural oscillation frequency of an LC resonant circuit.

Symbols

ff
oscillation frequency
[Hz]
LL
inductance
[H]
CC
capacitance
[F]

Where it comes from

A circuit with an inductor (LL) and a capacitor (CC) oscillates electrically at its resonant frequency — the larger LL or CC, the slower the oscillations. This is the basis of tuning radio receivers.

When to use it

LC resonant circuits, oscillators, radio tuning.

Example

L=1L=1 mH, C=1C=1 µF. Calculate the oscillation frequency.
SubstitutionLC=10−3⋅10−6=10−9LC=10^{-3}\cdot10^{-6}=10^{-9}.
Resultf=12π10−9≈5f=\dfrac{1}{2\pi\sqrt{10^{-9}}}\approx5 kHz.
