Period of oscillation on a spring

T=2πmkT=2\pi\sqrt{\dfrac{m}{k}}

Result unit: s (second)

What it describes

The period of oscillation of a body of mass m suspended on a spring of stiffness k.

Symbols

TT
period of oscillation
[s]
mm
mass of the body
[kg]
kk
spring (stiffness) constant
[N/m]

Where it comes from

A heavier body oscillates more slowly (larger TT), while a stiffer spring (larger kk) makes it oscillate faster. The period does not depend on the amplitude.

When to use it

Oscillations of a body suspended on a spring.

Example

A 0.5 kg body on a spring with k=200k=200 N/m. Calculate the period.
Substitutionm=0.5m=0.5, k=200k=200.
ResultT=2π0.5/200≈0.31T=2\pi\sqrt{0.5/200}\approx0.31 s.
