Total energy

E=γmc2E=\gamma mc^2

Result unit: J (joule)

What it describes

The total energy of a body in motion — it includes the rest energy and the kinetic energy.

Symbols

EE
total energy
[J]
γ\gamma
Lorentz factor
mm
rest mass
[kg]
cc
speed of light
[m/s]

Where it comes from

The total energy of a body grows with speed. At rest (γ=1\gamma=1) it gives the rest energy mc2mc^2; the difference E−mc2E-mc^2 is the relativistic kinetic energy.

When to use it

Particles at speeds close to cc (accelerators). As v→cv\to c the energy tends to infinity.

Example

A particle of mass 1 kg has γ=2\gamma=2. Calculate the total energy.
Substitutionγ=2\gamma=2, c=3⋅108c=3\cdot10^{8}.
ResultE=2⋅1⋅(3⋅108)2=1.8⋅1017E=2\cdot1\cdot(3\cdot10^{8})^2=1.8\cdot10^{17} J.
