Sensible heat

Q=mcΔTQ=mc\Delta T

Result unit: J (joule)

What it describes

Heat needed to change a body's temperature without a change of state.

Symbols

QQ
heat
[J]
mm
mass
[kg]
cc
specific heat
[J/(kg·K)]
ΔT\Delta T
temperature change
[K]

Where it comes from

The amount of heat depends on the mass, the type of substance (specific heat cc) and the temperature change. Water has a high cc — it is hard to heat up, but it retains heat for a long time.

When to use it

Heating and cooling without a change of state; heat balance.

Example

We heat 2 kg of water (c=4200c=4200 J/(kg·K)) by 10 K. Calculate the heat.
Substitutionm=2m=2, c=4200c=4200, ΔT=10\Delta T=10.
ResultQ=2⋅4200⋅10=84 000Q=2\cdot4200\cdot10=84\,000 J.
