Sum of a geometric sequence

Sn=a11−qn1−qS_n=a_1\dfrac{1-q^{n}}{1-q}

Result unit: — (liczba)

What it describes

The sum of the first n terms of a geometric sequence (for q≠1q\neq 1).

Symbols

SnS_n
sum of n terms
a1a_1
first term
qq
common ratio (q≠1q\neq 1)
nn
number of terms

Where it comes from

A compact formula for the sum of the terms of a geometric sequence (for q≠1q\neq1). When q=1q=1, all terms are equal, so S=n⋅a1S=n\cdot a_1.

When to use it

Summing a geometric sequence (sum of installments, repayments).

Example

For a1=1a_1=1, q=2q=2, n=5n=5 compute the sum.
Substitutiona1=1a_1=1, q=2q=2, n=5n=5.
ResultS=1⋅1−321−2=31S=1\cdot\dfrac{1-32}{1-2}=31.
