Geometric sequence — nth term

an=a1qn−1a_n=a_1 q^{n-1}

Result unit: — (liczba)

What it describes

The nth term of a geometric sequence — the first term multiplied (n−1) times by the common ratio.

Symbols

ana_n
nth term
a1a_1
first term
qq
common ratio
nn
term index

Where it comes from

Each term is the previous one multiplied by the common ratio qq. We reach the nth term by multiplying the first by qn−1q^{n-1}.

When to use it

Geometric sequences — percentage growth, compound interest, decay.

Example

For a1=2a_1=2, q=3q=3 compute a4a_4.
Substitutiona1=2a_1=2, q=3q=3, n=4n=4.
Resulta4=2⋅33=54a_4=2\cdot3^3=54.
