Angular velocity

ω=2πT=2πf\omega=\dfrac{2\pi}{T}=2\pi f

Result unit: rad/s

What it describes

Angular velocity — the angle swept out per unit of time during circular motion.

Symbols

ω\omega
angular velocity
[rad/s]
TT
period of revolution
[s]
ff
frequency
[Hz]

Where it comes from

In one period TT the body sweeps out a full angle of 2π2\pi rad, so the angular velocity is 2π/T2\pi/T. Since f=1/Tf=1/T, we also have ω=2πf\omega=2\pi f.

When to use it

Circular and rotational motion — it links the period, the frequency and the angular velocity.

Example

A wheel rotates at a frequency of f=2f=2 Hz. Find its angular velocity.
Substitutionf=2f=2 Hz.
Resultω=2π⋅2≈12.6\omega=2\pi\cdot2\approx12.6 rad/s.
