Frequency

f=1Tf=\dfrac{1}{T}

Result unit: Hz (hertz, 1/s)

What it describes

The number of full oscillations (cycles) per second — the reciprocal of the period.

Symbols

ff
frequency
[Hz]
TT
period
[s]

Where it comes from

Frequency and period are two sides of the same coin — the shorter the period, the more oscillations per second.

When to use it

Oscillations and waves; converting between period and frequency.

Example

An oscillation has a period of 0.25 s. Calculate the frequency.
SubstitutionT=0.25T=0.25 s.
Resultf=10.25=4f=\dfrac{1}{0.25}=4 Hz.
