Formulas & tables/Physics/Kinematics/Range of horizontal projectile motion

Range of horizontal projectile motion

x=v0tx=v_0 t

Result unit: m (metre)

What it describes

The horizontal range of a projectile is the product of the initial velocity and the fall time.

Symbols

xx
horizontal range
[m]
v0v_0
initial velocity
[m/s]
tt
fall time
[s]

Where it comes from

No forces act horizontally, so the motion in that direction is uniform — the range equals the initial velocity times the fall time.

When to use it

Horizontal projectile motion; take the time tt from the fall-time formula.

Example

A body is thrown horizontally at v0=15v_0=15 m/s and falls for 2 s. Find the range.
Substitutionv0=15v_0=15 m/s, t=2t=2 s.
Resultx=15⋅2=30x=15\cdot2=30 m.
