Wave speed

v=λfv=\lambda f

Result unit: m/s

What it describes

The speed at which a wave travels is the product of the wavelength and the frequency.

Symbols

vv
wave speed
[m/s]
λ\lambda
wavelength
[m]
ff
frequency
[Hz]

Where it comes from

In one period a wave advances by one wavelength, hence v=λfv=\lambda f. The speed depends on the medium; changing the medium at a fixed frequency changes the wavelength.

When to use it

Mechanical and EM waves; the relation between wavelength, frequency and speed.

Example

A wave has λ=2\lambda=2 m and f=5f=5 Hz. Calculate its speed.
Substitutionλ=2\lambda=2, f=5f=5.
Resultv=2⋅5=10v=2\cdot5=10 m/s.
