Length contraction

L=L0γL=\dfrac{L_0}{\gamma}

Result unit: m (metre)

What it describes

A moving body appears shorter in the direction of motion than at rest.

Symbols

LL
measured length
[m]
L0L_0
proper length
[m]
γ\gamma
Lorentz factor

Where it comes from

A moving body is shorter in the direction of motion when measured by a stationary observer. The effect is complementary to time dilation.

When to use it

Lengths of objects moving at relativistic speeds.

Example

The proper length is L0=10L_0=10 m, γ=1.25\gamma=1.25. Calculate the measured length.
SubstitutionL0=10L_0=10, γ=1.25\gamma=1.25.
ResultL=101.25=8L=\dfrac{10}{1.25}=8 m.
