Time dilation

Δt=γ Δt0\Delta t=\gamma\,\Delta t_0

Result unit: s (second)

What it describes

Time runs more slowly in a moving frame — a stationary observer measures a longer interval than the proper time.

Symbols

Δt\Delta t
measured time
[s]
γ\gamma
Lorentz factor
Δt0\Delta t_0
proper time
[s]

Where it comes from

A moving clock runs more slowly from the point of view of a stationary observer. The effect becomes noticeable only at speeds close to cc (muons, GPS satellites).

When to use it

Comparing time in frames moving relative to each other.

Example

The proper time is Δt0=1\Delta t_0=1 s and γ=1.25\gamma=1.25. Calculate the measured time.
SubstitutionΔt0=1\Delta t_0=1, γ=1.25\gamma=1.25.
ResultΔt=1.25⋅1=1.25\Delta t=1.25\cdot1=1.25 s.
