Wavelength

λ=vf=vT\lambda=\dfrac{v}{f}=vT

Result unit: m (metre)

What it describes

The distance between successive points of a wave in the same phase (e.g. two crests).

Symbols

λ\lambda
wavelength
[m]
vv
wave speed
[m/s]
ff
frequency
[Hz]
TT
period
[s]

Where it comes from

The distance between neighbouring crests. At a fixed speed, a higher frequency means a shorter wave.

When to use it

Determining the wavelength from speed and frequency.

Example

A sound has v=340v=340 m/s and f=170f=170 Hz. Calculate the wavelength.
Substitutionv=340v=340, f=170f=170.
Resultλ=340170=2\lambda=\dfrac{340}{170}=2 m.
