Arithmetic sequence — nth term

an=a1+(n−1)ra_n=a_1+(n-1)r

Result unit: — (liczba)

What it describes

The nth term of an arithmetic sequence — to the first term we add the common difference (n−1) times.

Symbols

ana_n
nth term
a1a_1
first term
nn
term index
rr
common difference

Where it comes from

Each successive term differs by a constant difference rr. Instead of adding rr step by step, we reach the nth term directly: the first term plus (n−1)(n-1) differences.

When to use it

Arithmetic sequences — when the increment is constant (rows in a theater, fixed installments).

Example

For a1=3a_1=3, r=2r=2 compute a10a_{10}.
Substitutiona1=3a_1=3, r=2r=2, n=10n=10.
Resulta10=3+9⋅2=21a_{10}=3+9\cdot2=21.
