Sum of an arithmetic sequence

Sn=a1+an2⋅nS_n=\dfrac{a_1+a_n}{2}\cdot n

Result unit: — (liczba)

What it describes

The sum of the first n terms of an arithmetic sequence.

Symbols

SnS_n
sum of n terms
a1a_1
first term
ana_n
nth term
nn
number of terms

Where it comes from

The sum is the average of the first and last term multiplied by their count — Gauss's trick (pairing terms from both ends).

When to use it

Summing successive terms of an arithmetic sequence.

Example

For a1=1a_1=1, a10=19a_{10}=19, n=10n=10 compute the sum.
Substitutiona1=1a_1=1, a10=19a_{10}=19, n=10n=10.
ResultS=1+192⋅10=100S=\dfrac{1+19}{2}\cdot10=100.
