Gravitational potential energy

Ep=mghE_p=mgh

Result unit: J (joule)

What it describes

The energy of a body raised to a height h in a gravitational field.

Symbols

EpE_p
potential energy
[J]
mm
mass
[kg]
gg
gravitational acceleration
[m/s²]
hh
height
[m]

Where it comes from

Energy stored by virtue of position in a gravitational field; measured relative to a chosen reference level (h=0h=0). Raising a body requires work equal to the increase in EpE_p.

When to use it

Bodies at a height; energy conversions (free fall, pendulum). Measure hh from the chosen reference level.

Example

A body of mass 5 kg is at a height of 3 m. Find its potential energy (g=10g=10).
Substitutionm=5m=5 kg, g=10g=10 m/s², h=3h=3 m.
ResultEp=5⋅10⋅3=150E_p=5\cdot10\cdot3=150 J.
